Pokemon are back, and they're in your neighbourhood

Pokemon Go has gone viral.

It's interesting to see something that was once so massively popular, re-emerge in a different medium.  There is no doubt that VR and AR gaming will become not only mainstream, but the number one platform for all gamers and game developers, but there is a long way to go yet.  Games like Pokemon Go, however, serve to keep things moving along and raise the awareness of the technology.

It's too early for me to tell how successful this game will be in the long run, as I've only been playing it for an hour or so, but I can already see the massive potential for the concept.  It does rely in you being somewhat mobile and willing to brave the weather, so it will be interesting to see how long people stick with it.

If you already enjoy taking walks around your neighbourhood, this is a game that could provide some extra value.  Maybe this is the style of game that will get more people outside and taking walks.  There has long been an argument that kids are spending too much time indoors on their game consoles, so perhaps this style of game will encourage them to be more active and explore their neighbourhood while still enjoying the entertainment of an electronic game.

I predict that in the very near future there will be a huge market created by AR and VR gaming in attracting paying spectators.  The success of games like Pokemon Go will only add strength to that prediction.

What are your thoughts?  Have you played Pokemon Go?   Are there any other mobile AR games that have caught your eye?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.
